Donald Mitchell is an African-American artist who has always lived with his family in Bayview, California. He is the third of eleven children, very shy and reserved, he murmurs more than he speaks. He comes to draw in the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland since 1976. His early works show surfaces of obsessively repeated erasures, which fill the entire sheet and obliterate the image. He begins each time with a small face or a figure, then he gradually fills the whole surface. He enjoys listening to music when he draws. He also composed a number of Blues. Mitchell’s drawings have gradually evolved, he now draws dancing and airy figures.
