Born 1941 in Los Angeles - USA.
Michael Dennis was born in Los Angeles in 1941. His background was as a doctor in the field of neurophysiology, and as a professor at Harvard and the University of California at Berkeley. Gradually, he left the medical world, moving in the 1980s to Canada where he lives today.
Dennis’s work is inspired by essential elements of the earth and the ancestral heritage of humankind. With natural materials such as wood, he creates often massive figures in a simple and direct manner that communicates the essence of artistic form while leaving their natural state undisguised. He finds much of his material on Vancouver Island, left behind by loggers, and begins his working process with a chainsaw, cutting away rotten or unusable portions of the wood, and finishing with the creation of elegant, powerful forms.
