Jephan de Villiers was born near Versailles, in Le Chesnay, France. Often ill as a child, he was frequently bedridden. From his bedroom, he looked out at a chestnut tree that he greatly admired, an early suggestion of the importance nature would have in his artistic work.
De Villiers began to make paintings and sculptures at the age of twelve. His contemporary work features organic, found materials such as bark, feathers from the area around his home near Brussels.
