Toby Calonico was born in 1937, and has worked at Creativity Explored since 1983.
He is an extremely prolific artist who is always creating new work.
Calonico combines painting and collage in ways that may first seem abstract, but are in fact collections of very specific and consistent symbols. Each type of amorphous, cellular-looking shape represents an object or subject drawn from Calonico’s life. For example, his visual vocabulary includes shapes representing cornflakes, potatoes, specific animals, stars, and even babies.
Calonico’s vivid, gem-colored compositions are not only fascinating abstract artworks, but also function as an inventory of belongings and experiences significant to the artist.
